Hi! I’m Emma Stiefel :D
I’m a journalist/developer/engineer who uses data and web dev to investigate power and immerse readers in digital stories.
Right now, I’m a newsroom developer at The San Francisco Chronicle. The short description of my job is that whenever a project requires code, I’m the one who writes it. I develop interactive multimedia web pages, scrape websites, analyze data, design charts, and still write my own articles every once in a while.
Before this, I was a technical contractor for Metrics for News for about a year. I was proudly editor-in-chief of the Minerva Quest, my college news publication. As a student, I was an editorial intern at Cincinnati CityBeat, a reporting intern at the Hamilton Journal-News, a tech support intern for Minerva Project, and a content development intern at Minerva Schools at KGI, with stints as a pizza delivery driver, an ice cream roller, and a barista in between. I was selected for AAJA’s Voices fellowship.
I graduated from Minerva Schools at KGI (now Minerva University!) in 2021 with majors in data science and history with a focus on digital humanities.
Curious about what I do when I’m not muttering at my laptop? Ask me about vegan baking, K-pop dance moves, or the best thrift stores in San Francisco.
